Training with a Cold or Flu

Sally Drake (not a Dr, but I think they will agree :-))

The season for the common cold or the flu is here. Depending on the symptoms and their severity, sometimes it is tough to decide if exercise will make you feel better or worse. And, the question of whether or not a run or spin class will prolong your illness. There are a few rules to follow when deciding to work out or stay at home and keep your germs to yourself!

Stay home and rest if you have:

  • fever
  • muscle aches
  • chest congestion
  • vommiting
Get your blood pumping if this is all that ails you:
  • head cold
  • stuffy nose
If you decide to go and work out, consider keeping it easy, heart rate zone 1-2 and just see how that feels. Studies have been done with results showing exercise can make you feel better AND speed up recovery! I found a great article from the New York Times, check it out: Don't Starve a Cold of Exercise
