Foreword
Thursday January 31, 2008
As I make preparations to embark upon what I anticipate will be a trip of a lifetime, I ponder what lies down the road for me. Surely these travels will affect me in many surprising ways. When it's all said and done, I suppose my life will never be the same, at least that's the intent.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not struggling to find myself, unveil the meaning of life, or otherwise imbue the trip with any deep, philosophical implications. On the contrary, it's simply about the travel-- people, places, and things. But in the course of pedaling thousands of miles through this amazing country, some sort of personal transformation seems inevitable, whether it's subtle, something completely overwhelming, or lies somewhere between the two.
It feels a bit odd to be contemplating the end of the trip even before I set out, but framing this tour in a big picture perspective helps me wrestle with it. When the kickstand comes down for final time, I suspect that from all outward appearances I'll still look much the same, save perhaps being leaner and displaying those funny looking but well-defined tan lines. Under the surface, however, it may be a different picture altogether, my mind and soul distended from their six-month smorgasbord of images and emotions now demanding a long, slow, and complex digestion.
So as I fine tune the equipment list and struggle to narrow the itinerary, I wish to thank everyone at Crazy Guy on a Bike. Quite frankly, without this resource I seriously doubt that I ever would have undertaken an adventure of this scope. The numerous journals I followed have been a constant source of you-can-do-it antacid to the but-what-ifs that bubbled up in my stomach. Now after five months of wondering, wishing, and planning, in just one short month I'll finally be truckin' like the do-dah man. I can't wait...
